Mission
Our mission is to implement and continuously offer an affordable, safe public transportation system for all residents in Meigs County.
Vision
Meigs County Public Transit's vision is to be an effective, sustainable public transportation system for economic opportunity and development for our communities. We envision a future in which residents can meet their independent needs without owning a vehicle — through an easy and efficient way to get to the places they need to go.
About our service
- MCPT provides demand-response, curb-to-curb public transportation within Meigs County, Ohio. Door-to-door service is available upon request for those needing reasonable assistance beyond the curb.
- Free transportation for all residents within Meigs County, Ohio and the town of Mason, West Virginia.
- Trips are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.
- MCPT is a shared-ride service — passengers may be on board with others traveling at the same time and in the same direction.
Rider's guide — using our service
MCPT is a "Demand Response Shared Ride" public transportation service available throughout all of Meigs County, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Our service is open to the public — anyone can use it.
Register & schedule
Call (740) 444-5555 between 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday–Friday. All trips are scheduled based on availability, and space is limited — schedule as far in advance as possible for the best service.
Plan for a shared ride
Remember, our service is a shared-ride program and not a taxi. You may share the vehicle with other riders, so trips can take longer than a private car. Give yourself extra time to ensure on-time arrival.
Get your pickup time
Once your ride is scheduled, dispatch provides a pickup time. You'll receive a reminder call the day before, and a notification when your driver is en route on the day of your trip.
Cancel if plans change
If you no longer need your trip, please call our office so someone else can take your place on the schedule.
Thank you for using Meigs County Public Transit services!
Rider guide & policies
The information below is the accessible version of the MCPT rider brochure (last revised February 8, 2024). You can also download the brochure (PDF). This brochure is available in alternative format upon request, and interpreter services are available.
Trip reservations
All trips are scheduled in advance on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to time and space availability. Reservations should be requested 48 hours in advance of your requested pick-up time. To schedule, call (740) 444-5555 during normal business hours — trips cannot be scheduled by telling a driver.
When scheduling, you may be asked for: your name, home address, telephone number, pick-up and drop-off addresses, desired arrival or drop-off time, and any special accommodations needed. Next-day and same-day trips will be accommodated if available.
Will calls
Will-call return trips are offered based on availability only. MCPT operates on a demand-response, first-come, first-served basis, so all trips should be scheduled ahead to guarantee availability.
Pick-up window
MCPT has a 30-minute pick-up window — the vehicle may arrive anytime from 15 minutes before to 15 minutes after your scheduled pick-up time. If there is no response within 5 minutes of the vehicle arriving at your location, you will be considered a No Show.
Cancellations & no-shows
Please attend your scheduled rides. To cancel, contact dispatch at (740) 444-5555 at least 24 hours before your scheduled trip. If the driver cannot locate you, or you did not cancel at least 24 hours ahead, you will be marked a No Show. If you are recorded as a No Show for 20% or more of your scheduled rides within a rolling calendar year, your service may be suspended. You can appeal a suspension by calling (740) 444-5555 and asking to speak with the Transportation Administrator.
Accessibility
Individuals with mobility disabilities are welcome to use wheelchairs and manually powered mobility aids (walkers, crutches, canes, braces, or similar devices). MCPT also transports individuals traveling with portable oxygen tanks and respirators; for safety, portable oxygen tanks must be able to be secured.
Reasonable modifications
If you need a service accommodation or modification, please notify MCPT when making your reservation. For more information about the reasonable modification policy or to file a complaint, contact MCPT at (740) 444-5555. Attempts will be made to honor all reasonable modification requests.
Transportation of children
All children over 8 years old must wear a seat belt. Children under 4 years old or 40 lbs. must be secured in a car seat. Children ages 4–8 and under 4’9” must use a booster seat. Car and booster seats are the responsibility of the parent or guardian. MCPT operators are not responsible for securing children accompanied by an adult — that responsibility belongs to the parent/guardian.
Safety
Seatbelts must be worn at all times in MCPT vehicles. All wheelchairs must be secured with a 4-point securement system. Passengers must remain seated with seatbelts fastened until the vehicle comes to a complete stop.
Rider courtesy
Our service is shared-ride, so riders are expected to be respectful and courteous. Please do not eat, drink, smoke, vape, chew tobacco, play loud music, engage in loud conversation, curse, or touch or disturb others in the vehicle.
Prohibited activities & restrictions
Illegal acts, threats, or acts of physical violence will not be tolerated; MCPT will contact law enforcement for assistance in threatening situations. Any rider who poses a “direct threat” to the health or safety of others will be denied service.
The following are not permitted on vehicles:
- Items large enough to block the aisle or emergency exits
- Garbage, recycled material, aluminum cans
- Flammable materials such as gasoline or oils
- Shopping carts of any kind
- Lawn mowers, weed eaters, bicycles
- Profanity, intimidation, or fighting
- Opened food or drink
- Illegal drugs
Any violation may result in removal from the vehicle due to safety concerns.
Assistance
Service is provided from the outside door at your pick-up point to the curb at your destination. The driver may assist you to and from the curb when boarding or leaving the vehicle but is not permitted to enter a residence or building, and is not required to transport items from the vehicle to a building. An escort or personal care attendant may accompany you.
Drivers are trained in passenger assistance and will secure wheelchairs and help with seatbelts if needed. Loading and unloading bags/packages is primarily the responsibility of the passenger or their attendant. Please limit carry-on bags, and keep aisles and exits clear; only what the passenger can carry is permitted, and MCPT may contain bags in secure totes for safety.
Service animals
MCPT welcomes service animals. Service animals must be under the constant control of their handler.
Holidays & weather closings
MCPT is closed based on the holiday schedule set by the Meigs County Courthouse (holidays are subject to change). For inclement weather, all passengers will be notified promptly of closings and cancellations; MCPT follows the direction of the Meigs County Sheriff’s Office for road advisory conditions.
Fares
Currently, MCPT does not charge fares. MCPT reserves the right to change this policy as needed; all changes will be publicly announced.
